Story

Our heart in every creation

At U k'aan am, we weave axolotls and other figures of local animals with love and dedication, using traditional techniques passed down through generations. Each creation is unique and reflects our worldview and connection with nature, family, our roots, and ourselves, both personally and collectively. With each piece crafted by us, we aim to promote awareness about species conservation and also highlight that collective work yields great results when done with love and commitment.

In the picturesque town of Sotuta, Yucatán, stands the majestic "Castillo Rojo" now the Casa de la Cultura Maya Nachi Cocom. In this setting, surrounded by nature, between walls that hold centuries of history, it’s where, in 2017, a group of women came together with a common dream: to create a space to share and learn weaving and embroidery knowledge. It was through mutual support and collaboration that we formed the Women’s Weavers and Embroiderers Collective U K' AAN AM, which means 'the weaving of the spider.

We began by weaving amigurumis of various sizes and shapes, using knitting and crochet techniques. With dedication and practice, we refined our skills until we designed our own creations.

Our effort and love for weaving have allowed us to achieve a high level of quality. As a result, we started selling some of our products in stores in Mérida and Mexico City.

The journey has not been easy, but despite the challenges, the income generated from our sales has been an invaluable support for our families, improving our household economy and strengthening our community.

Today, we continue weaving with passion, creating high-quality products with original designs, committed with innovation and the preservation of our traditions. Additionally, our new project, the creation of woven axolotls, not only allows us to express our creativity but also contributes to the conservation of this endangered species.

We want to invite you to be a part of our story, to discover our creations, and to support a community of women who weave their dreams with every stitch.
